A day inside the forest, not just beside it.

Eleven kilometres, one day, and a forest that makes Sa Pa feel far away.

  • The trail leads into the old-growth core of Hoàng Liên National Park — rare trees, deep shade, and the specific quiet of forest that has stood for a very long time
  • Lunch is served at a sturdy rest hut around 2,200m, so you eat in the forest instead of hiking back out for it
  • The way down passes a stream and a large waterfall hidden in the old growth — the part of the day most people don't expect
2 /5

Advanced

A full day on forest trail with a steady climb and rocky sections, but no overnight and no technical climbing. Right for reasonably fit walkers who want real forest rather than a short stroll.

Physical demand

About 11km and 800m of total climbing across 5–6 hours of walking, on forest ridges and rocky slopes, with a lunch break at the rest hut.

Altitude & terrain

The rest hut sits at around 2,200m — well below the range where altitude is a concern. No overnight at height, no technical climbing.

Remoteness

A day inside the national park with a registered entry, a guide and porter throughout, and a vehicle waiting at the end of the trail.

The day, step by step.

Day 1 Lunch in the forest
Into the old-growth forest — rest-hut lunch, rare trees, waterfall
5–6 hrs trekking 11km 800m up

We collect you in Sa Pa and reach Hoàng Liên National Park by 09:00 to register your group for the forest. The first stretch, about 4km and 430m of climbing, winds through forest ridges and rocky slopes to a sturdy rest hut at around 2,200m, where lunch is served. After the break the trail turns deeper into the core of the forest — roughly 3.5 to 4km, with a further 200m of climbing — passing rare trees such as trâm ổi and ancient wild tea. From mid-afternoon the way leads down, past a stream and a large waterfall tucked into the old growth, before your car meets you for the ride back to Sa Pa town centre.

Hoàng Liên Old-Growth Forest Trek — landscape

Old-growth forest, half an hour from Sa Pa.

Above Sa Pa the Hoàng Liên range is blanketed by forest that most visitors only see from a distance. Hoàng Liên National Park protects it, and the walk begins where the park registers its visitors — a quiet checkpoint, then the trail.

Hoàng Liên Old-Growth Forest Trek

The climb is steady rather than brutal: forest ridges, rocky steps, a rest hut waiting around 2,200m. Beyond it the forest changes character. The trees are older, the light lower, and your guide points out rare species along the way — trâm ổi, ancient wild tea.

The descent is the reward. A stream appears first, then a large waterfall tucked into the old growth. By 16:30 the car is waiting and the day is over — a full forest day with no night away from Sa Pa.

Know before you go.

Medical access time

~2–3 hours from the deepest point on the route to hospital-level care in Sa Pa.

Phone signal is unreliable inside the forest. Your guide carries the group's primary means of communication — let family know not to expect contact for most of the day.

If something goes wrong

1

On-site response

Your guide carries a first-aid kit and is trained in wilderness first response. Minor injuries and blisters are treated on the trail and the group's pace is adjusted immediately.

2

Assisted evacuation

If a guest can't continue but isn't in danger, the guide and porter organise a supported descent to the closest point a vehicle can reach.

3

Medical evacuation

For serious cases, the guide contacts local emergency support and coordinates transport to the nearest hospital-level facility in Sa Pa.

Travel insurance is included for every guest, with coverage up to 100,000,000₫ per person per incident — including emergency evacuation costs.
